By the Numbers: UFC Atlanta

Kamaru Usman just needed some time to recharge.

After a hiatus that lasted nearly two years, “The Nigerian Nightmare” looked to be in peak form in the UFC Atlanta headliner, as he grounded Joaquin Buckley repeatedly en route to a unanimous decision triumph at the State Farm Arena on Saturday night. While Usman did have to survive a scare in the final stanza, he nonetheless showed that he still has plenty left in the tank even at 38 years old. Buckley, who harbored championship dreams coming into the fight, sees a six-fight winning streak snapped in defeat.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Atlanta, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

16: Welterweight victories for Usman, tying him with Vicente Luque for the fifth most in UFC history. Only Neil Magny (22), Georges St. Pierre (19), Matt Hughes (17) and Matt Brown (17) have more.

4: Takedowns landed in 13 attempts for “The Nigerian Nightmare.” Usman grounded Buckley once in each of the first four rounds. He was denied on all six of his attempts in the final stanza.

63: Career takedowns for Usman, who moved past Johny Hendricks and into sole possession of third place in UFC welterweight history in that category.

12:57: Total control time for Usman. Buckley was unable to log a single second of control time in defeat.

137: Total strikes landed by Usman. By comparison, Buckley landed 51. Usman was especially dominant in Round 1 (41-1), Round 2 (33-3) and Round 3 (33-13).

44: Significant strikes landed by Buckley. Usman, meanwhile, landed 41. Buckley landed more significant strikes than Usman in each of the final three rounds, including a 20-to-10 edge in Round 5.

6: Career knockdowns for Rose Namajunas. The former strawweight queen floored Miranda Maverick in the third stanza to help clinch a unanimous decision triumph in the UFC Atlanta co-main event.

12: Career UFC wins for Namajunas. The Wisconsin native is now 3-2 since moving to 125 pounds.

25: Significant strikes landed by both Namjunas and Maverick. The majority of those were in the opening stanza, when Maverick held a 20-to-17 edge. Both fighters landed five significant strikes in Round 2, and Namajunas outlanded her opponent by a 3-to-0 count in Round 3. Maverick held a 52-to-46 in total strikes landed.

6:33: Control time for Namajunas, who was successful on two of four takedowns. Maverick failed on both of her takedowns and logged 1:48 of control time.

17: Failed takedowns between Raoni Barcelos (10) and Cody Garbrandt (seven) in their featured bantamweight encounter. Barcelos landed the bout’s only takedown in the opening stanza. The Brazilian also outstruck Garbrandt and went on to win a unanimous decision.

.290: Significant striking accuracy for Garbrandt, who landed just 28 of 94 attempts. Barcelos was more accurate, landing 37 of 85 attempts for a 43% success rate.

3-7: Record for Garbrandt, a former bantamweight champion, since 2017.

33: Significant strikes by which Michael Chiesa outlanded Court McGee en route to a unanimous decision triumph at welterweight. Interestingly enough, that is the largest significant striking deficit of McGee’s 24-fight UFC tenure despite having faced the likes of Robert Whittaker, Santiago Ponzinibbio, Sean Strickland, Carlos Condit, Tim Means and Matt Brown over the course of his career.

3: Consecutive first-round KO/TKO victories for Malcom Wellmaker, who vanquished Kris Moutinho 2:37 into Round 1 of their preliminary bantamweight showdown. Wellmaker’s other victims include Adam Bramhald on the Contender Series and Cameron Saaiman at UFC on ESPN 66.

14: UFC appearances — out of 15 total — where Simon has landed at least one takedown against his opponent. The lone occasion when he was shut out in that category was a 46-second stoppage loss to Urijah Faber at UFC Fight Night 155 in July 2019.
